There is a plethora of ways to make a girls dreams come true. A limitless shopping spree, inventing guilt free ice-cream, a date with Ryan Gosling. For me, an invitation from Sportstylist to exclusively shoot the launch of Nike ID's latest customised Air Huarache trainers, was it.
Pre-shoot outfit decision selfies? Check. Raddest pair of NIKE x Liberty high top trainers which will later be swapped for a custom pair of Air Huarache’s? Check. Willingness to skate through the hoards of commuting people on Oxford Street? Check. Outfit styled to perfection thanks to the Sportstylist gurus? Check.
As I skated into Nike Town on Oxford Street and was shown to my exclusive designer pod, I thought to myself, ‘this is where the magic happens’. Wall to wall with the best Nike’s you have ever seen, the designer station is suspended in the centre of the store. I was introduced to the team of Nike ID experts, including ‘Hattie’, who would run me through the entire process of designing my very own pair of custom Nike Huaraches.
Would you like safari print on your custom Nikes? Obviously. How about hot molten lava speckles along the black soles of your Nikes? Clearly. Let’s go massively retro on these Huaraches and make every single section of the shoe leather, and while we’re at it let’s throw in some turquoise hues along the inner shoe and side panel just to make sure there are a few throwbacks to the ocean? Done.
Not only can you pick and choose out of a myriad of fabrics, colours and prints, but you can design as many pairs as you like and then compare them all before you purchase! To tie in this whole experience and really cement that once these Nike’s are on your feet, they were in fact designed by yours truly, there is an option to put your custom ID on the back of each shoe!
'Seriously? I can put my name on my shoes?’. Next. Level. Awesome!
Once I had chosen out of my 3 different designs, we hit the purchase button and I was greeted with what I like to think of as my exclusive Nike credit card. A business card size piece of heaven with all the details of my customised shoe, complete with a photo of the kicks you just designed and your ID.
After trying on about 10 pairs of different coloured Huaraches, I literally felt like I was bouncing around the store. Incredibly comfortable, supportive and complete with built in inspiration to make you *skate better, *run faster, look more stylish. *Definitely not proven but I suspect it to be 100% true. During this process I couldn’t help but come up with a few different ways to style these retro design Huaraches, originally launched in 1991 and being rereleased with a vengeance. Sophisticated yet sporty. Luxe yet nostalgic. I would pair the all white, all leather versions with distressed cropped jeans, a crisp white untucked shirt and high vibe-ing overcoat.
The process of designing my own shoes with my guardian NikeID angel, Hattie, was not only super simple and incredibly fast, it was one of the coolest experiences I have ever had. So with my skateboard in tow, and my personalised Nike card, I set off back down Oxford Street feeling a little bit like Carrie Bradshaw in her Manolo’s. Except this was better, I had my very own pair of personalised Nike Huaraches, and I was about to design a skateboard to match them.
