SOUL SLIDER #10 - Morgan 'Women in the Wild' Brechler

by Tess Willcox

BE STILL. MY BEATING, NATURE FROTHING, BAREFOOT ADVENTURE SEEKING, HEART.

Not a lot of people I come across in life, leave me speechless (my best friends can attest to my inadvertence to stop speaking. What can I say, I bloody love to talk. I love language, I love communicating, I love expression, I love..... stop). There are a select few enigmatic souls, who quite literally have left me devoid in description of their epic-ness.

Those of you who have followed my journey, know that I am a girl of the trees. Hell I live in a treehouse in the Eco-Village! Salt running through my veins, natures own elixir 'gum sap' igniting my soul. My best friend and I used to have a specific cry call to each other from the backyard creek to the house, using a gum nut. Rarely does a weekend go by that I am not on some kind of adventure through the bush, in the trees, hunting down mother natures' best work for me to marvel at, and drink an aptly aided red wine in front of.

You can imagine how EXCITED I get when I inadvertently discover other 'women of the wild'. Whether near or far, we all share a kinship. An absolutely all encapsulating FROTH for the green stuff  that warrants unforgivable hash tagging #natureporn #womeninthewild. A heart wide open, soul busting at the seams, energetic levels vibrating at such a frequency that wild dogs and dingos are losing their shit, kinda' excitement.

There is this group of women who exist in the world, who get me. They fill their tank up in nature, are effortlessly beautiful (like this is what azure style and grace is defined by), sink their poison of choice in the most epic of surroundings, and are unapologetically daughters of the earth.

Morgan. As if she stumbled out of a polerstuff #campvibes catalogue and just oozed awesomeness, with the cutest bebe known to nature kind in tow, 'Hadlie', is a harbinger of connection. Conduit for the passionate living network, intentionally paving the way for consciousness and appreciation of the wild, lover of burritos (OBVS!) and permaculture student. Arizona based, but as free to wander this beautiful expanse of earth with her #squadgoals pack as she pleases.

She climbs the shit out of rock formations, camps amongst her natural Arizonian habitat, takes her protege Hadlie along for the ride, chases waterfalls and takes a god damn killer photo.

It is my absolute pleasure to introduce you to, Morgan 'Women in the Wild' Brechler;

1. Who are you, and what is it that keeps your soul alive?

I’m just a regular gal who picks her nose, eats too much chocolate and has insane amounts of passion for the outdoors and veggies. Some how lucky enough to be the mom of the raddest little mini, Hadlie. All of the above keeps my soul alive. Minus the nose picking. Add hot sauce.

2. Your life looks pretty amazingly connected and beautiful! If you could perfectly design your day, what would it look like?

Well first of all it would have WAY more hours in it than 24. So with that being said, if I had more hours. I would have the slowest morning; waking up in our roof top tent in the pine trees with my family, BIG breakfast feast around an early morning campfire. Lots of giggles from Hadlie. Horses would be at camp with us, and we would spend the whole day riding to all of our climbs. Because of course in a perfect day there has to be lots of rock climbing. We would finish the day up with the most insane sunset and a disgusting amount of s’mores: )

3. Give us the down low on the BORN WILD film and the inspiration behind it.

I am feeling so damn lucky to be apart of this film with Shannon, who has been a crush of mine since the beginning of my gramming days. And Brooke, who is just as equally as bad ass and of course our leader and director Aly, this film would not be possible without her.

We're to explore the topics of adventure, risk and motherhood. For me, most importantly is finding adventure while balancing a busy life with school and working full time. We want to celebrate and inspire women and men, with children or without, to follow their dreams passionately. We are to begin shooting next month and the film is to be released in 2016.

I mean ......

I mean ......

4. What is the best piece of advice you have been given in life, and what piece of advice do you consistently pass on to your girl?

Breathe.

5. What would you say the style of your abode is? Beach chic, Boho eclectic, a shit tonne of organised chaos?

Its like, boho hobo haven’t showered in a few days, but damn girl how you look so cute and where the hell did you get that outfit, I want it. But seriously, for the most part I don’t brush my hair, I never wear make up and my closet is a mess. I am really surprised at the outfits I put together and make work sometimes. :P

6. If I was to say to you, design your PERFECT Soul Deck (skateboard)... What would it involve?

I’m really struggling with this one – Totally, majorly torn. Do I design something super ridiculously awesome like a crazy, hilarious saying OR a burrito, yeah that would be good. Just a big ol’ burrito board.. OR ok, some thing real chill – desert colors, cactus, Arizona vibes. Hm, looks like I am going to need more than one deck! Lol. (Eds Note : Don't forget to check the post, girl)

7. Tell us about your ideal combo of senses (what would you like to be looking at, tasting, smelling, feeling and hearing all at the same time)

Oh geez, this has my brain on overload. I’ll keep it short on this one as I feel as though I could get easily lost in the dreaming up of this one.

I would be looking at a campfire and lots of teeth on familiar, smiling faces, tasting a cold hoppy beer, smelling a combination of roasting marshmallow’s and open air, hearing the chatter and laughter amongst my closest friends and family, and feeling so much love that my heart may just be close to exploding.

#squadgoals

#squadgoals

8. What does it mean to you to live a life of soul? Is there something that drives you to live each day to the fullest, inspire people, live that sensational vagabond life??

To live a life of soul is to be able to escape the everyday grind to chase down passion and adventure. To surround your self with uplifting, inspiring people (shout out to my squad!) Finding what your deepest passions are, holding onto those passions and sharing them with the world. Happiness drives me, it’s as simple as that. Nothing is as complicated as it seems. Go with the flow and stuff.

9. If you could have Sunday breakfast in bed (romantic or platonic) with anyone in the world, who would it be?

Hadlie and my man. How about we add at least five puppies into this bed as well. There’s no other way I would have it. I’ll breakfast in bed with them over anyone, any day, anywhere. Although, Hadlie NEVER shares her pancakes with me. But who needs pancakes when you have puppies to cuddle.

10. Lastly, what does being a Soul Slider mean to you?

Being a Soul Slider to me means, living a life that is calm but crazy. Finding the balance in which life is an utter chaos of passion, adventure and inspiration - but at the same time within the chaos, having a sense of tranquillity and stillness to be able to take it all in and appreciate each moment for exactly what it is.

AND NOW WE ALL EXHALE ......

SOUL SLIDER #8 - Kim 'Babin Cali Slider' Bennett

by Tess Willcox

Fresh faced beauty, Californian beach babe, owner and designer of Tasi Malibu, free spirit! I remember stumbling across Kimberley Bennett's personal instagram account and professing her awesomeness to myself on the spot! Who was this girl; travelling the world wearing the brightest Californian hues, snowboarding, skating and surfing her days away, and why aren't we best friends?! Turns out she would be as epic as she is awesome, and running one of my favourite Californian based brands, Tasi Malibu! I can't even step out of the house in my JENA Jacket, without getting asked where I purchased the rad little beauty, and that is the perfect indication of how well received her designs are. They are as bright as her smile and as infectious as her lifestyle. She has killer steeze, styles her company photoshoots like an absolute boss. I'm talking, makes you want to drop what you are doing in life and pack up your car for a road trip with her! Introducing you to not only one of the most up and coming brands in Cali, but to the insanely talented face behind it; Kimberley 'let's hang out asap' Bennett.

Who are you, and what is it that keeps your soul alive?

My name is Kimberley Bennett and I live in Southern California!  Being outside, breathing ocean air and enjoying the simple things in life is what keeps my soul alive!

Your life looks pretty damn rad!! If you could perfectly design your day, what would it look like?

I would wake up super early to catch the sunrise. After my morning coffee I would meet up with my soul sister Anna to do some yoga in the sunshine. Then I would cruise to the local farmers market to buy some fresh fruit and coconuts, after I would end up at the beach to spend the day playing in the ocean and laughing with friends till the sun goes down :)

Give us the down low on Tasimalibu and the inspiration behind it.

Tasi Malibu is inspired by our amazing colorful, laid back California lifestyle. We live in our bikinis and in loose comfortable clothes. It is summer here everyday and everyone that lives here is so inspiring and artistic. Every time I leave the house I get a ton of new ideas just from walking around my neighborhood. I wanted to create fun, unique and original clothes for my friends and I to live in !

What is the best piece of advice you have been given in life?

Not to over think things and to be my best self, meaning to be the best version of myself always !

What would you say the style of your abode is? Beach chic, Boho eclectic, a shit tonne of organised chaos?

Definitely organized chaos!! You would think that being a clothing designer I would have a specific style but that is not the case. My style is constantly changing but the things that stay consistent are color and comfort. I have never been a fan of black and I have never been a fan of high heels haha...bright orange and barefoot is more my steeze.

If I was to say to you, design your PERFECT Soul Deck... What would it involve?

Definitely lots of bright colors, with a theme of summer... Mixed with the Tasi Malibu vibe.

What does it mean to you to live a life of soul? Is there something that drives you to live each day to the fullest, inspire people, live that sensational vagabond life??

There's not a day that goes by when I don't feel blessed to be living my dreams, surrounded by the amazing people that l love and that love me. It's all about being positive and appreciating what you have. That is living a soulful life.

If you could have Sunday breakfast in bed (romantic or platonic) with anyone in the world, who would it be?

It would be with my partner Jeremy, the love of my life. When I'm with him, there is nowhere else I would rather be ;)

Lastly, what does being a Soul Slider mean to you?

Riding life like a perfect wave and doing it with deep soul and appreciation for this amazing life we live and this amazing world we call home.

SOUL SLIDER #7 - Dan 'Dude Food' Churchill

by Tess Willcox

Masterchef protégé, inspirational human, creator of the 'Dude Food' concept and cookbooks, and all round legend of the earth. If you spend 5 minutes with one, Dan Churchill, you realise it's almost as if the term 'passionate foodie' was curated with him in mind. It's not often you find someone as young and talented as Dan, who is paving the way for living a healthier lifestyle (generally with dudes in mind), who is driven by pure authenticity. It's not that he has built his business and profile on marketability, he legitimately gives more than two shits about health, life and inspiring anyone who happens to cross his path.

Dan and I shared many passionately driven, inspirationally charged conversations in London late last year, as we spent a week exploring Borough Market, the back streets of Hoxton and the amazing restaurants of Shoreditch. It's always been hugely inspiring and humbling for me to be surrounded by people who legitimately have no idea of the impact they have on those who stumble into their lives. Dan just gets it. He lives his purpose. He inspires people. He is HUNGRY (literally) to teach, and to make an impact. He understands the difference he can make in this world, is purely driven by soul, and has not one self indulgent bone in his body (which you would expect from a dream boat like him).

With no motive other than wanting to make a fucking rad impact on the way people live their lives, his positivity is contagious. We threw business ideas at each other over bottles of wine (of which myself and his brother, Brendan, drank 99%), discussed the origins of cheese, listened to his explanations of the different cuts of meat, and searched for London's best cookie.

Dan in all of his 26 years, is one of the most incredible humans I am blessed with having in my life. As we wandered the streets of London, Masterchef was airing on UK TV. Accosted by packs of screaming High School girls, we watched in awe, as he chatted to every single fan, armed with a plethora of selfie sticks just so they could capture the moment. He has as much time for his fans as he would for Miranda Kerr, and THAT, with pockets of insane inspiration and determination, is what makes DAN CHURCHILL, the ultimate Soul Slider.

Who are you, and what is it that keeps your soul alive?

My name is Dan Churchill and I am cook/writer/Dude… without making it sound obvious it is food… but not for the notion as a fuel source. I get up every day excited to eat and come up with epic combinations of flavour. I have seen the power of what food can do in bringing people closer together and I am driven to create so much awareness and excitement on it… I mean who doesn’t love meal time right? ;)

You have worked your way up to living the dream life! If you could perfectly design your day, what would it look like?

I reckon my day is like my plates or bowls, super tasty, full of colour and always exciting. Typically i am up early getting a session in or a surf and then I am either writing, filming, cooking at the cafe or fortunately on a plane somewhere discovering some amazing cultures and experiences

Give us the down low on your #Mondaymotivation. You know it’s one of my favourite things you do, what inspired you start it?
Hahah I do love my Mondays… Well its pretty simple i find a lot of people were so sad on a Monday morning… and I know a lot of people these days look at Instagram as soon as they wake up, so I wanted to give them something to feel good about, smile and maybe relate and be inspired by the quote that I choose for that week. I want people to believe anything is possible and being happy is infections

4. What is the best piece of advice you have been given in life?
Probably, “you are the most reliable person for yourself”. I was told this by my old man. It's not that you can’t rely on other people or trust them, its more or less saying, 'don’t wait around for things to happen otherwise they wont get done'… your mates don’t pay your rent you do

5. You are travelling a lot at the moment to launch your epic cook books, where in the world is your favourite place, and why?
I can’t say I have been everywhere in the world… yet hahaha! I would have to say i feel such a connection to Italy. The way of life, the culture, language and food is all amazing. I love the way that, as a family, they all sit down together to eat. Then at night time they all go for a walk in the streets. I think the buildings are super wicked, there is soooo much history there. I claim to be 1/32 Italian. There is a bit of a distant blood line but I genuinely feel i am full blooded. Don’t get me wrong I am Australian and will always remember that, but I would have to say there is a massive Italian influence in me :)

6. If I was to say to you, design your PERFECT Soul Deck... What would it involve?
First off EPIC!!!!! Dream come true right there ;) I guess I would say it would have to embody who I am, so food, beach, italy, cooking, family, surfing training that kind of thing. It would be awesome to carrying it as if it were a bit a personal story… one that will bring a good smile every time you look at it

10443539_1055137007836210_1668293455388706793_n.jpg

7. Tell us about your ideal combo of senses (what would you like to be looking at, tasting, smelling, feeling and hearing all at the same time)…
Hahaha hopefully i provide enough imagery for your awesome readers on this one… It is a busy friday night, sitting in a piazza in Rome on a rickety chair as its legs fight between the gaps of the cobble stone historical lanes. The italian restaurant is completely family owned and the Nonna who waves at me as I sit down is still cooking in the kitchen. A fresh plate of Cucinare Casalinga (homestyle cooking) Italian pasta plate is placed down below me. Steam findings its way through the flaked parmesianno reggiona cheese, melting it as it passes through. The fresh pasta is covered in a silky rich tomato Sugo and I notice my favourite herb… basil not through my sight but through the uplifting sweet sent. As I twirl the fork allowing flavours from beneath to combine and I hear the many families and violinists playing i note this is simplistic cooking and an experience everyone should have.

8. What does it mean to you to live a life of soul? Is there something that drives you to live each day to the fullest, inspire people, live that sensational vagabond life??
I want to empower people. Make them realise they can do anything they set their mind to. I am a massive advocate for being happy. Although I am seriously driven, its not to be famous, but to make people realise their potential. Food is my tool to do that. I know the positive emotions it can bring, and the relationships it can heal and build on.

9. If you could have Sunday breakfast in bed (romantic or platonic) with anyone in the world, who would it be?
Hahahaha hmmmm Would love to share some of my gluten free Coconut and Banana Pancakes with Mirander Ker :)

10. Tell us what is in store next for Mr Dan Churchill.
Oh wow… ahhh well I will play word association and keep it to one word answers… Dudefood, Books, USA, Cafes, TV… Plenty more but can’t let the cat out of the bag too early ;)

Right after devouring the worlds best Cookie!

Right after devouring the worlds best Cookie!

11. We recently went on the hunt for the worlds’ best cookie in London. Then I ate it. What is the one dessert that you could never turn down if it was put in front of you.

Hahahaha how good was that cookie in Borough Markets!?!?! Ok well yes I do have a sweet tooth, but I am also very good at saying no. I love cookies, Gelato and chocolate but rarely get involved. I reckon if one of my idols Jamie Oliver or Tom Brady made me a big "get out of bounds" chocolate and peanut butter cookie, I couldn’t say no… Mind you, i think if Mirander Kerr or Mila Kunis made them I probably wouldn’t say no either :))) … Actually there is also the worlds best Gelato (Ed note: In Rome, Dan told me this story. IF you ever meet him you have to ask him to tell you himself), I just had to have that bad boy twice.

Follow Dan and his EPIC journey below. Keep an eye on this one, he is going far.

SOUL SLIDER #6 - Lady Slider, Life Ridahhh. She's our JJ!

by Tess Willcox

We call her JJ, or Jessie Jane! She is one half of the magnificent duo, Jess and Muzz, interior design extraordinaire, DIY GURU, enigmatic lady slider, gentle soul. If you have ever spent your days cruising around the white sands of Currumbin, you have more than likely seen JJ. She is that blonde beauty, board under arm, beer in hand, friends in tow, with a smile that rivals the sparkle of the sun. Jess is our little beach bum, and I am lucky enough to call her one of my closest friends. No one dares go vintage shopping with this little ray of sunshine, because she will without a doubt pick every single item with any kind of style, within 10 minutes. She runs the raddest of DIY and style blogs, slides along the glassy waves with effortless grandeur, and kicks off the back with her signature smile. Cruises along the pavement on her sunflower soul deck, with a steed that all would covet. She brightens up each and every morning with her giggle on our walks, and has created the most RIDIC of abodes with her partner Muzz. One of the most gentle and kind souls I have had the pleasure of being blessed with in my life. Jess is the epitome of soul, wanderlust, kindness and warmth. The ultimate Soul Slider, babin' life ridahhhh! Introducing Jessica Jane Terrell (@jesssicajane) ;

JJ and her custom Longboard x

JJ and her custom Longboard x

Who are you, and what is it that keeps your soul alive?

My name is Jessica Jane. I'm a twenty-something Interior Design student and avid water baby from the Gold Coast. Growing up in the beachside town of Currumbin, I spent most of my time at the beach and in the ocean. Hopping on my bike, board under arm, I would peddle my way to the beach every day. Heck, those were the days! Surfing is still one of my rituals and something that keeps me centered and makes me extremely happy to be alive! I love that I share the same passion for the ocean with my close family and friends.

I know your life rules, because I get to be a big part of it!! For everyone reading who doesn’t get to spend their days with you, can you tell us what your perfect day would look like?

My perfect day begins when the sun is rising with an early walk along the beach followed by a coffee from my local with the girls. Packing my basket of beach worthy goodies, I grab my board and umbrella and walk over the dunes to the beach to spend the majority of the day there. I would spend my afternoon treasure hunting and getting crafty in my studio and to top it all off, enjoying the dusk atmosphere, sipping on a cold cider in the dunes with my boy. That sounds pretty damn perfect to me…

Describe your sunrise and sunset routines for us…

I like to wake up early and walk along the beach to enjoy the sunrise. It’s such a beautiful part of the day, but I am particularly partial to the setting sun as well. Muz and I spent a good part of last year travelling abroad and each day we made a special trip down to the ocean to watch the sun set over the water, sipping on a cold beer and enjoying the breathtaking colour display. The beauty of nature never ceases to amaze me.

There was one memorable moment we experienced while travelling through Morocco that I will never forget…sitting on the rocks in Taghouzout, we watched the sun setting over the water and behind us the full moon rose up over the mountains. It was such an incredible display!

What is your favourite drink combo. We both know I love a good red wine or Sailor Jerry’s and coconut water..... What would you drink if we were sitting at your place?

Homemade Sangria with fresh orange slices... YUM!

Walking into your and Muz’s home, to me, is like stepping foot in an issue of Vogue crossed with retro throwbacks crossed with beautiful homemade pieces and a dash of bohemian. What is the inspiration for your home, and how would you describe it?

Our little retro beachside home is an eclectic mix of everything we love, old and new and each item tells a special story of whom it belonged to or where it came from. I'm a collector and slightly obsessed with retro items and antiques. I spend A LOT of my spare time scouring local op shops and second hand stores for treasures that fill our home. Things are constantly changing in our little abode with each and every crazy idea I have. Muz and the cats have since learnt to accept change, haha.

The home of Jess and Muzz. One of my favourite places to watch Hamish and Andy, and drink Sangria.

The home of Jess and Muzz. One of my favourite places to watch Hamish and Andy, and drink Sangria.

You are currently studying interior design, and ROCKING at it. Where do you want to go with your studies, and have you always wanted to do this?

It has always been a passion of mine albeit I never really had the courage to step outside my comfort zone. Growing up in a creatively inclined family we were always drawing, building and making all sorts of crafty things. I’m still constantly making and creating and I wanted to incorporate this passion into my work life…. So to get the ball rolling, I changed my work habits, enrolled in Design School and I couldn't be happier! My future plans involve changing my career path and working towards building a successful business of my own!

We’ve already worked on your perfect Longboard Soul Deck together, if you were to get a second one, what would it entail?

I envisage wildly bright colours, captivating patterns and rhythmic words…

What is your favourite colour combo, and how does it make you feel?

The Sun and the Ocean…..I can't go past the vibrant warmth, excitement and enthusiasm that orange (the sun) provides, complimented by calm blue tones (the ocean), together these colours are the perfect match.

IMG_8338.jpg

Tell us about your ideal combo of senses (sight, smell, sound, touch, taste)…

Sight and Touch.... for me, learning and taking things in invokes tactile and visual stimulants. I have to touch everything that interests me and my creative mind is always stimulated visually by sight.

What does it mean to you to live a life of soul? Ie. Is there something that drives you to live each day to the fullest, inspire people, live that sensational vagabond life??

Be true to yourself and always do what makes you happy. Follow your dreams, no matter how crazy they might seem and never let anything or anyone stop you from being yourself! I try to remind myself of this everyday. Travelling taught me a lot about myself and encouraged me to look at everything with a different perspective and to appreciate all that I have!

Lastly, what does being a Soul Slider mean to you?

Riding your wave of life with vivacious energy and passion.

JJ x

SOUL SLIDER #5 - Happy and Free with Jaimi-Lee

by Tess Willcox

As I read through the musings of one Jaimi-Lee Fitzgerald, I listen to 'Daisy Chain' by Angus Stone. It is as if there wasn’t a song written more perfectly, for what I can only describe as the eliptical daisy child, bohemian spirit, radiant being, harbinger of happiness and conduit of creativity. I met Jaimi, at Top Shop in Byron, with the 14th Soul Deck ever made in hand, presenting it to the original hippie child, with a smile brighter than the sun. Since that day, we have forged a lovely friendship, meeting in random places and supporting each other in our separate endeavours. She has since progressed to be kicking absolute ass within the Spell & the Gypsy Collective team, and has just ordered Soul Deck number 3 for herself.

There are people who cruise into your life, that you never get to spend a lot of time with, but that you know are wedged in there for good. Like your favourite scented candle, that you don’t burn often, but when you do the fragrance is so all enveloping you wish you burnt it every day. Jaimi-Lee is that kind of chick to me. As I wrap up reading her musings, realising just how similar we are, Bob Dylan cruises his way into my ear waves, so reminiscent of the kind of Spirit Jaimi exudes. Cool, radiant, timeless, awesome. As gorgeous outside, as she is inside. She downs chilli margaritas, can style the raddest of spaces, and rolls around the streets of Byron on her Soul Decks.

She, my friends, gets it. She gets what it is all about. Introducing, the exuberant, Jaimi-Lee Fitzgerald.

Follow Jaimi-Lee's journey on instagram here @jaimileef

The goddess herself

The goddess herself

1. Who are you, and what is it that keeps your soul alive?

I’m Jaimi-Lee, I’m 24, I grew up in a tiny country town just out of Adelaide in South Australia on a property where my parents would call in the cows to eat the grass & the chickens would roam around the backyard. Two & a half years ago I packed up my life and moved it to Byron Bay, not knowing a single soul.

My soul feeds off new experiences, music & all it provokes, the sound of the ocean, the feel of the sun & salt on my skin, making people laugh, nourishing food, country air, inspiring style, good wine & love – love for individuals, for nature, for life. I could go on…

2. Your life looks pretty damn rad!! If you could perfectly design your day, what would it look like?

Coming from your inspiring self! My perfect day would involve a sunrise swim and walk on the beach followed by an epic healthy breakfast with a few of my favourite people, an adventure into the hinterland, a hike, exploring the waterfalls or simply a drive out to the farms to pick up some of the organic produce they sell on the side of the road. Then a little road trip to my favourite beach, Whites or Cabarita, for the entire afternoon – armed with a fresh coconut, fruit, a few magazines & my soul sister (my right hand woman, housemate & best friend, Liv). I’d take a sunset skate on my longboard soul deck down to the store, grab a bottle of red & some food so I can cook dinner for a few friends and laugh the entire night away over stories & old school hip hop music. (EDS NOTE : Ummmmm, off to do that right now. Shall we?)

Or, waking up on a campsite with my favourite people somewhere on the coast & spending the entire day in the ocean, drinking from coconuts, sharing stories and having afternoon beers while watching the sunset.

3. Describe your sunrise and sunset routines for us…

I wake up with the sun everyday, even after a late night, my body is wired to wake up early. I am lucky enough to live literally 50m from the beach so my mornings are normally spent strolling along the beach, watching the sunrise and finishing with a dip in the ocean. I start work early so I get ready for work, stop at my favourite coffee shop for my caffeine fix and head off to the office.

My sunset routines always vary, after the morning my afternoons become a bit chaotic & I’ve never really been one to follow an afternoon routine – I do whatever the hell I feel like doing on any given day. But on Fridays it’s straight to my favourite whiskey bar for a drink.

Soul Decks #1 and #2, with #3 currently on the way! Yes we always refer to our Soul Decks like children.

Soul Decks #1 and #2, with #3 currently on the way! Yes we always refer to our Soul Decks like children.

4. What is your favourite drink combo. Mine is sailor Jerry’s and Coconut Water, FYI.

Chilli Margaritas, tequila, chilli, lemon & salt, or whiskey, straight.

5. What would you say the style of your abode is? Beach chic, Boho eclectic, a shit tonne of organised chaos, or something a bit more descriptive?

Living so close to the beach our house has the beach shack feel to it along with a touch or boho & a little bit of chaos. We have surfboards lining the walls, a few market finds around the place, a lot of DIY & an epic little outdoor area that sees the morning sun. In my room; I have images ripped out from my favourite fashion magazines popped into frames, a huge pile of magazines, yoga books and biographies & my soul decks sitting pretty under my window.

6. If I was to say to you, design your PERFECT Soul Deck... What would it involve? (designs, quotes, words, patterns, size?)

A long board for sure because I’ve fallen off my short board more times than I can count and this mostly results in an ‘almost’ broken ankle and several grazes on my leg. The word ‘Freedom’ would be on there, it’s my favourite word – and not in a meaning that your free from everything or someone but a freedom within yourself, to be who you want to be and do whatever the hell you want to do. I’d keep it a natural, raw timber, because something in its raw most vulnerable state is when it is most beautiful. I’d finish it off with a compass – because no matter what direction you go you’ve got to trust the universes natural compass and know it’s taking you exactly where you want to be.

7. What is your favourite colour combo, and how does it make you feel?

The colours of the sunset over my local beach, Tallow Beach, when the pastel hues (pinks, blues, oranges) in the sky reflect off the water in the late arvo. I feel my most inspired – it’s when I do my best thinking, when I feel my most grateful and when my soul feels most alive.

8. Tell us about your ideal combo of senses (What would you like to be smelling, listening to, seeing etc etc at the same time)

Sight, sound & touch. The combination of a smiling face with laughter is my favourite thing in the world. If someone can make you laugh – keep them in your life forever, these people will make your world brighter. Music festivals have that crazy nostalgic sight & sound feel to them, the memories that stick with you forever; I like to listen to the music, see the people, feel the good vibes. Touch – touching the sand with your feet, the ocean with your body or a person you love with a hug.

9. (And my personal favourite question) What does it mean to you to live a life of soul? Ie. Is there something that drives you to live each day to the fullest, inspire people, live that sensational vagabond life??

To live a life of soul; is to inspire, to let that fire burn inside and feel a complete sense of freedom within your self. For me, it’s consistently wanting to test my limits & go beyond my boundaries - & hopefully I can inspire someone to do the same along the way. If you can go through life meeting inspiring people, falling in love and learning – then I think you’re onto a pretty fun soulful life. I ask myself everyday, ‘When your life is exactly how you imagined it, where to next?’ This is what drives me to keep growing & searching for that next soulful experience.

10. What is that you do for work, and would you have it any other way if someone said you could do WHATEVER you wanted??

I’m the Wholesale & PR Manager at local Byron Bay label Spell & the Gypsy Collective. I fell into the role by accident, I started working one day a week with the brand making jewellery and packing orders. After a LOT of hard work I worked my way up into what I’m doing now. I absolutely love what I do, I get to deal with fashion all day long, go to music festivals for ‘work’, hang with inspiring chicks all day, travel, write & be challenged. It’s hard to believe that this is the work I do now – I thought I’d be 30 before I had a job like this.

I also do some freelance work; styling shoots, reviews, pulling together events & most recently, getting the opportunity to contribute my writing to a magazine. This is a work in progress project for me and it’s something that keeps my creative brain ticking over. I’m constantly aiming high, so who knows what is in store for me next but I have a feeling the universe is taking me in a pretty rad direction – I’ll let it do it’s thing & throw in the hard work along the way.

11. Lastly, what does being a Soul Slider mean to you?

Being a Soul Slider means pouring passion into everything you do, into relationships, love, art, craves, the world and yourself. Creating connections with people, laughing, finding your tribe – those people you’d find it hard to live without, those people that inspire & encourage you – and nurturing them. Trying new things, falling down and getting up again & working hard. Respecting our world, the animals, the nature & the sea. Laughing your heart out, being thankful, going with the flow & knowing that this life is yours – ride it.

SOUL SLIDER #4 - The treasure that is Stella Crick

by Tess Willcox

Little Miss Stella. Her life looks like the one we all dream of.

Waves, Wheels, Wandering.

Turquoise lagoons galore with splashes of bright colour and aloha hues. She's a lady slider, the ultimate life rider, and proud of her heritage. A budding photographer, who emits an air of radiance in front of the lens as well. As if there was a Soul Deck in this universe that suited her more than the Coconut skater. She's the kind of girl you want in your life, whilst you chase coconuts around the tropics, jump in waterfalls and giggle your way through a log fest wearing flower crowns. Meet Stella below, and follow her RAD life o' soul via instagram @stellacrick

wTeiGxF8oPOfq1QDPMFe1ci6xvz0k6cbwhR1kkCYJbE.jpeg

Name : Stella Crick

Who are you? What is it that keeps your soul alive?

My name is Stella Crick, I am 19 years old and live on the south coast of NSW, Australia in a small coastal town called Coledale. I’m Aboriginal and come from Worimi country, my people are saltwater Aboriginals and lived in harmony with the coastal environment for thousands of years, the ocean helps me feel connected to country and it keeps my soul happy and content.

Your life looks pretty damn rad! If you could perfectly design your day, what would it look like?

A perfect day for me would have to start off with a hearty brekky like a homemade blended smoothie using local fruits. It would then be followed by a surf check using a soul deck of course! Then I’d surf perfect little peelers at a right point break on my longboard until I am surfed out. To refuel and re-energise I would fill up on a yummy seafood feast and lounge at the beach with the ones who mean most to me. That pretty much sums up my ideal day!

Describe your sunrise and sunset routines for us…

To me, sunrise and sunset are the most beautiful times of the day. I love the colours that they produce, and as a photographer I’ve realised that everything seems to be so photogenic during sunrise and sunset… so I take a lot of pictures during these times. I love shooting the ocean in the early morning when the waves are backlit and illuminate every time they form. I also am a huge fan of taking pictures at sunset when nature puts on a show, and paints the sky extraordinary colours.

What is your favourite drink combo? Mine is sailor jerry’s and coconut water (F.Y.I) go!

Vodka and peach schnapps mixed with some sort of juice

What would you say the style of your abode is? Beach chic, boho electric, a shit tonne of organised chaos, or something a bit more descriptive?

I live right on the beach, I’m so fortunate to be able to casually look outside my windows to see all sorts of marine life, like dolphins, whales, huge schools of fish and sometimes even seals. My bedroom definitely reflects the environment in which I live in, I would say it is beach chic styled, its completely covered from wall to wall and floor to roof with photos that inspire me (mostly all ripped out from my dad’s surfing magazines shhh). I love looking around my bedroom walls to see hues of ocean blues and greens within the photos.

If I was to say to you, design your PERFECT soul deck… what would it involve?

Soul decks are awesome because not only can you use them for cruising around, at the end of the day they can be used as an artistic decoration in your house. So my perfect soul deck has to be functional for the pavement but also look pretty for sitting in my house. I would love to paint my soul deck with Aboriginal designs to portray sea country, including stingrays (my totem animal).

What is your favourite colour combo, and how does it make you feel?

I have a few different favourite colours, basically I like anything that’s vibrant. If I had to choose a colour combo it would be either bright pinks and oranges, or blues and greens... I can’t decide (I’m a really indecisive person). These colours remind me of tropical flowers and the colours of the ocean, so they make me feel joyful and excited.

Tell us about your ideal combo of senses…

Sight would definitely have to be in there because I love what I see, that’s why I am a photographer… I want to capture moments I see forever. Within the combo would also have to be touch because to be honest what feels better than running your hand through water as you glides across a wave. Oh and also taste, simply because I love food.

What is it that you do for work, and would you have it any other way if someone said you could do WHATEVER you wanted?

I’m studying at university so I don’t have a lot of time for work (or so I tell myself), but I am a freelance photographer on the side, so I do underwater, fashion and lifestyle photo shoots (mostly for swimwear and surf brands). My motto is “surf forever, work whenever”, I think its really important to enjoy life so you have to do whatever makes you happy. If I could do whatever I wanted and get paid for it, I would be travelling the world, surfing and taking photos.

Lastly, what does it mean to you to live a life of a soul slider? Is there something that drives you to live each day to the fullest, inspire people, live that sensational vagabond life?

To live the life of a soul slider you have to be able to break away from the chaos that surrounds you. You have to be open to new opportunities, make the effort to make connections with new people, open your eyes to what is around you and most importantly take care of the people and environments that support you. That’s what motivates me every day to live the life I love.

SOUL SLIDER #3 - Zac Miguel

by Tess Willcox

Z A C. Be still my beating heart! A true nomadic wanderer in the purest sense, reminiscent of Johnny Depp crossed with Lords of Dogtown no less. He plays music, travels to some of the most spiritually deep treasure troves around the globe, and takes a damn fine photo. Without even meeting Zac, you can tell he has that pizazz. His spirit escapes the photo when you stare at it. He knows how to make a vibe come alive, and involve you in his life. He embodies that effervescent coolness, style, and can slide his way around the streets on a vintage deck.

I decided I would either need to marry him, or feature him as the first prolific dude Soul Slider. I opted for the latter, and you are WELCOME!!

10483355_229760877233791_362252185_n.jpg

Name : ZAC MIGUEL

1. Who are you, and what is it that keeps your soul alive?
Hmm...well firstly my name is Zac and I guess I feel like I've grown into the person I want to be. I would have to say that living simply keeps my soul alive, and all that comes with it- the experience, inspiration, the ocean, music, art, travel, and all that jazz.

2. Your life looks pretty damn rad!! If you could perfectly design your day, what would it look like?

Haha thanks! My idea of a perfect day would be trekking through a forest, full of life to discover a perfect beach with some perfect waves to share with some loved ones, accompanied with some instruments and finish off with some wine and a fire on the sand, cuddled up watching the stars do their thing. That would be pretty damn perfect!

3. You embody everything I love about that vagabond spirit. Along your travels, which place has been your favourite and comes with the most meaning to you?

Ahh shucks :)- Ooo it's hard to pick a favourite that's for sure, they all have different qualities and culture and experience within each and every one of them, right now I think perhaps India. The place rocked my world from day one, the scents, colours  and vibration was out of this world. I no longer felt a western influence.

4. What is your favourite campfire story to tell of your travels?
Haha well I was chased on horseback by  horse bandits in the Gobi desert in Mongolia- eventuating in spending the night in the mountains. upon finding a ger (Mongolian yurt) the following day, I had to eat a rather awful, boiled organ of a sheep (best not to say haha) a nomadic tradition of Mongolian people...that's probably the standout haha!

5. What would you say the style of your abode is? Beach chic, Boho eclectic, a shit tonne of organised chaos, or something a bit more descriptive?

Probably a mixture of boho eclectic and organised chaos for sure, with a hint of a bush gentleman. (Authors note : Bush gentleman, SWOON)

10175324_311650418987338_1861900642_n.jpg

6. If I was to say to you, design your PERFECT Soul Deck... What would it involve?

My perfect soul deck would have to be inspired by the 60s and 70s, likely something from dogtown. Manoeuvrable, fast, smooth and finished off with a little bohemian loving.

8. Tell us about your ideal combo of senses (sight, smell, sound, touch, taste)...

Haha wow! good question- I think touch, sight and sound. I like to feel the vibration in everything and what's more beautiful then seeing the world around us and hearing the sounds it creates.

9. What does it mean to you to live a life of soul? Ie. Is there something that drives you to live each day to the fullest, inspire people, live that sensational vagabond life??

To live a life of soul, it's the ultimate freedom one can achieve in this busy society that we live. it's there for everyone, all one has to do is just reach out and grab it, and most of all...hold on. I feel extremely blessed to be able to do the things I can do, without loving support from loved ones and inspiration from interesting characters, it would be proven a little more difficult. If you have a goal,do all you can to achieve it. Make your own path, and leave a trail.

10. What is that you do for work, and would you have it any other way if someone said you could do WHATEVER you wanted??

I teach music for work when I'm home, we teach a range of world instruments as well as the classics. It's pretty close to being the perfect job, we have the privilege of doing what we want when it comes to our approach, so it's really rad!

11. Lastly, what does being a Soul Slider mean to you?

Being a soul slider to me is like, if you can imagine yourself cruising down a newly sealed hill that leads to your destination, there are some obstacles on the road, and other people sharing that same hill, some get caught up at the obstacles, they stop or they fall off, they become attached. where a soul slider can smile, arch their back and cruise past, carving with style, looking to the horizon and when the time has come, reach their desired destination. Thank you for taking interest in my world :)

You can follow Zac and his incredibly, aesthetically pleasing journey through life on Instagram

Bubbles!!!! Have you ever met someone, heard their nickname, and thought to yourself, 'Yep! You embody every single thing about that word!'?

With Sarah 'Bubbles' O'brien, I felt exactly that. We met one fateful night, through a guy, and had no idea of the lifelong friendship we would form. Sarah is a rad cat. A quintessential summer sista who possesses this effervescence that most would dream of. With the purest of smiles and kindest of hearts, she embodies the Soul Slider way in effortless grandeur.

Sarah understands living that life o' soul. She is the first out in the line up, and the one rocking the fluro-est of gear at our Fluro Friday jaunts. Sunrise worshipper, Sunset catcher, all with that killer smile and a glass of bubbles in her hand.

I designed a special custom whip for her (Soul Deck #18 to be precise) and months later she presented me with a beautiful blank surfboard to go nuts on. I had an absolute blast scribbling pink nonsense and whimsical palm trees on that sled. Introducing you, to Sarah O'brien. Soul Slider, Sun Lover, Babe, Killer life rider and lifelong friend o' mine.

Name: Sarah OBrien

What made you purchase a Soul Deck: As a massive fan of Tess and her Soul Decks I was following Ames_Collective Instagram and saw a photo which was the deciding factor that I need one in my life... http://instagram.com/p/br8vISs_41/ Not only did I picture myself skating down to Burleigh Point; watching the waves and taking the exact same photo! The quote "My heart lies with the snow : My spirit with nature : My soul with the sea" captured me instantly.

Did you get a custom, or just fall in love with a pre-made Soul Deck? I never thought when I ordered my Custom Soul Deck that it would come out the way it did, and that I could fall in love with a Skateboard. It still amazes me and I cannot say it enough how talented Miss Tess is. I text her and said, I love pink and the quote on "that instagram photo" can you make me a skatey? The result was absolute perfection... nothing less.

Describe your sunrise and sunset routines for us...: My alarm goes before the sunrises, I throw on a Billabong Surf Capsule and run to my local point & paddle out at first light for a surf no matter what. On my JS which Tess actually sprayed for me :P Every time I am on a wave and I see the pink nose (that matches my skatey) it makes me smile even more. I love early mornings; when it feels like everyone is still fast asleep and you're capturing the sunrise from the best seat in the house & in that moment all your worries and problems dissapear... I love it. Sadly I don't have a sunset routine, because it depends what time I finish work and if I go to the gym, that usually takes me into the night... but if I could I would shred my Soul Deck up the Burleigh Esplande, the shadows at that time through the trees are really really cool... then sit on North Burleigh Hill... with a glass of bubbles!

What does your Soul Deck mean to you? Does it wash away your daily stresses, is it a piece of art looking rad on your wall, or do you shred it on the street!! : I definitely take my soul deck for a spin every now and then but it also sits admired in my bedroom by all. I love it because it captures an essence of me in the simplest most raddest form...

What is your favourite drink combo. Mine is sailor Jerry's and Coconut Water, FYI. Go! : Ohhhhh i LOVE bubbles... bubbles bubbles bubbles. Drink combo would have to be likewise my friend Sailor Jerry's but mix it with Gingerbeer... YUM!

What would you say the style of your abode is? Beach chic, Boho eclectic, a shit tonne of organised chaos, or something a bit more descriptive? : I live in an apartment which came furnished so sadly I do not yet have my ideal abode... living over here as an English chick it's hard to be able to happily settle and purchase home-wears when I never know how much longer I have... but if I were to style a place right now it would be Beach Chick with a hint of Pink (and any other bright colours!) I love white furniture, distressed ocean washed wood and shells, you can never have enough shells. This would be mixed in with bright pink cushions of course.

How were you introduced to skating? Tell us your story...: When I was at Uni back in the UK I lived with 4 boys who all surfed and skateboarded to uni and I remember thinking they were soooo cool. None of the girls I grew up with skateboarded and it was quite a boyish thing to do, so while I always wanted to skate I never really did... Until I moved to Australia and saw the coolest raddest most gorgeous chicks skating around so elegantly. I bought a board and that was that... rolling everywhere. Even more so now with my custom skatey.

What is your favourite colour combo?: Pink, pink and more pink.

Tell us about your ideal combo of senses (sight, smell, sound, touch, taste)...: Sight and Sound. The feeling I get when I see snowy mountain tops in New Zealand and The Alps, the excitement of knowing I will be standing on top of the world above the clouds carving up the snow... the sound of a powder turn, the chairlifts and the apres music in the bars :P The sound of waves crashing on the ocean bed, it actually sends me to sleep at night and the sight of a set coming in the lineup gives me goosebumps. Hearing the water spray over the top and seeing it peal into what feels like the best wave of your life... ahh its just amazing.

Lastly, what does being a Soul Slider mean to you?: Bringing feminine beauty to male dominated sports, by never letting anything or anyone get in the way of doing what you want to do. As you say so rightly "live the life you dream of living." x

SOUL SLIDER #1 - Life in the Slow Lane with LISS

When I stumbled across Liss' instagram @lifeintheslowlane_, I could tell she got it. She got that vibe that we are always banging on about, and I knew that she just HAD to be my first Soul Slider feature. The slow life, the simple wants, the life riding. I couldn't wait to share Liss' effervescent vibe and soulful adventures with you.

She is a sustainable gal, has few material possessions - choosing to spend her dollars on her elusive journeys around our sunburnt country - and is the kind of girl you want in your life. For epic green smoothie sessions, for sunset slides in glassy perfection, for theatre movie nights under starry skies. I think it's safe to say, that when I finally connect with Liss, we will be besties for years to come. Introducing LISS and her sunliner caravan 'Sunny'.

47cc1d5eb17a11e3bb44125da3cb3f33_8.jpg

1. Who are you, and what is it that keeps your soul alive?

I am Melissa Connell, but I prefer 'Liss'.  31 years old, currently travelling Australia in my 1959 Sunliner caravan named 'Sunnie'.

It's the simple things that feed my soul - exploring the countryside; singing and playing my guitar; spending time with friends and family; meeting strangers and hearing their stories; laughing. I love laughing! And I love hearing other people laugh!

2. Your life looks pretty damn rad!! If you could perfectly design your day, what would it look like?
Wake up at sunrise and look out of my caravan window at a deserted beach, preferably somewhere warm; go for a bike ride with my border collie; knock back a banana/honey/chia/coconut smoothie; go surfing with a few friends (warm water - I hate the cold!); do a little bit of work or create something.

Then a perfect afternoon would involve swimming underneath a waterfall; reading poetry; watching a vintage surf movie projected onto the side of my caravan; and then enjoying some fresh fish cooked over a bonfire with some friends or family. Yeah, that would definitely be my perfect day!

3. Describe your sunrise and sunset routines for us...
When I'm not travelling, I'm based in the Kimberley (remote north Western Australia) and my usual routine is to wake at around 6am and take pup for a bike ride through the mango plantations of the Ord Valley (Kununurra, eastern Kimberley), then go for a swim.

At sunset I usually go kayaking and wildlife watching in Kununurra's wetlands, pup sits up front. She likes to run up and down the kayak spotting for crocodiles and barra. She always falls overboard! Haha. That's ok, she loves swimming.

My routine when I'm on the road varies each day, depending on where I am. It usually involves a morning beach walk and an evening bonfire. I don't own a television, so I usually go to sleep early and wake early.

4. What is your favourite drink combo. Mine is sailor Jerry's and Coconut Water, FYI. Go!
I don't drink a whole lot of alcohol, apart from the odd Matso's mango cider or Jack Daniels.

5. What would you say the style of your abode is? Beach chic, Boho eclectic, a shit tonne of organised chaos, or something a bit more descriptive?
My 11 foot vintage van is very simple. I don't own much, so she's pretty clean and organised most of the time. I have a few little bits and pieces that I love - feathers, shells, stones, flags and some colourful cushions and rugs. I really love natural and earthy tones, so the interior has a pretty peaceful vibe.

6. If I was to say to you, design your PERFECT Soul Deck... What would it involve? (designs, quotes, words, patterns, size?)

I have a real fascination and love for indigenous culture. I guess this is due to spending so many years in the Kimberley (which has a large indigenous population), and I have a little 'sister' who is aboriginal (I've spent lots of time with her since birth as my folks are her respite foster carers). I'd love to see a collaboration with an indigenous artist, with part of the profit going towards an indigenous organisation. I've heard of a couple of awesome ones lately - programs teaching Aboriginal kids to surf or play music. Aboriginal art generally has a lot of earthy tones, and I love earthy colours.

7. What is your favourite colour combo, and how does it make you feel?
I think that the best colour palettes can be found within nature. I love the colours that can be found in the Kimberley's savannah landscape - brown dirt, long straw coloured grass, green plants, mauve and yellow wildflowers dotted throughout.

Green is my favourite colour, so anything that involves green is calming and peaceful for my soul :)

8. Tell us about your ideal combo of senses (sight, smell, sound, touch, taste)...
I love colour - rainbows, colourful birds, pink lakes (I found a beautiful one in my recent travels through South Australia). I can't imagine being blind and I am so amazed by people like Gurrumul who are blind, yet make amazing music!

I definitely love the sense of smell too. I can't walk past a flower without stopping to smell it! And right now as I write this, a storm is blowing over. I can smell rain coming, and it's such a beautiful smell!

9. (And my personal favourite question) What does it mean to you to live a life of soul? Ie. Is there something that drives you to live each day to the fullest, inspire people, live that sensational vagabond life??
To be honest, I just really love people. I love meeting people from all walks of life, hearing their stories, and also experiencing other cultures. This is why I travel. If I wanted beautiful landscape, I wouldn't need to leave the Kimberley. If I wanted a beautiful beach, well there are plenty right here in Australia. Whilst it's definitely awesome going somewhere like Africa and seeing animals roaming wild, it's always the people that inspire me to continue exploring. Tribes that live in really remote places especially fascinate me. It's interesting to see how people live when they're removed from the media and influences of the Western world. I aspire to live a very basic and sustainable lifestyle, and I feel there is a lot to learn from the indigenous cultures of the world.

10. What is that you do for work, and are would you have it any other way if someone said you could do WHATEVER you wanted??
I've lived in so many places in my lifetime. Growing up, my family travelled a lot and that planted the seed within me. I left home when I was 17, straight after I graduated school in Broome. I moved from town to town - Margaret River, Perth, Gold Coast, Sydney, Byron Bay, London, the list goes on... So I've done every job under the sun! But the one thing that I've consistently come back to since I started working at 14 years old has been tourism, Kimberley tourism. I love the Kimberley so much, and talking to people, so I've been passionate about my job for years. But I dream of opening a B&B by the sea one day. Simple accommodation, a veggie garden, hammocks hanging from the trees. We'll see. For the moment, I'm happy working seasonally in Kimberley tourism. But I definitely feel a change coming soon ...

11. Lastly, what does being a Soul Slider mean to you?

To me, soul sliding is embracing your passion and bringing your own groove and style to your chosen craft / sport / hobby. Expressing yourself, whilst still being respectful of others, facing your fears and enjoying the moment. Having gratitude, thinking positive and wearing a smile whenever possible!
