SOUL SLIDER #4 - The treasure that is Stella Crick

by Tess Willcox

Little Miss Stella. Her life looks like the one we all dream of.

Waves, Wheels, Wandering.

Turquoise lagoons galore with splashes of bright colour and aloha hues. She's a lady slider, the ultimate life rider, and proud of her heritage. A budding photographer, who emits an air of radiance in front of the lens as well. As if there was a Soul Deck in this universe that suited her more than the Coconut skater. She's the kind of girl you want in your life, whilst you chase coconuts around the tropics, jump in waterfalls and giggle your way through a log fest wearing flower crowns. Meet Stella below, and follow her RAD life o' soul via instagram @stellacrick

Name : Stella Crick

Who are you? What is it that keeps your soul alive?

My name is Stella Crick, I am 19 years old and live on the south coast of NSW, Australia in a small coastal town called Coledale. I’m Aboriginal and come from Worimi country, my people are saltwater Aboriginals and lived in harmony with the coastal environment for thousands of years, the ocean helps me feel connected to country and it keeps my soul happy and content.

Your life looks pretty damn rad! If you could perfectly design your day, what would it look like?

A perfect day for me would have to start off with a hearty brekky like a homemade blended smoothie using local fruits. It would then be followed by a surf check using a soul deck of course! Then I’d surf perfect little peelers at a right point break on my longboard until I am surfed out. To refuel and re-energise I would fill up on a yummy seafood feast and lounge at the beach with the ones who mean most to me. That pretty much sums up my ideal day!

Describe your sunrise and sunset routines for us…

To me, sunrise and sunset are the most beautiful times of the day. I love the colours that they produce, and as a photographer I’ve realised that everything seems to be so photogenic during sunrise and sunset… so I take a lot of pictures during these times. I love shooting the ocean in the early morning when the waves are backlit and illuminate every time they form. I also am a huge fan of taking pictures at sunset when nature puts on a show, and paints the sky extraordinary colours.

What is your favourite drink combo? Mine is sailor jerry’s and coconut water (F.Y.I) go!

Vodka and peach schnapps mixed with some sort of juice

What would you say the style of your abode is? Beach chic, boho electric, a shit tonne of organised chaos, or something a bit more descriptive?

I live right on the beach, I’m so fortunate to be able to casually look outside my windows to see all sorts of marine life, like dolphins, whales, huge schools of fish and sometimes even seals. My bedroom definitely reflects the environment in which I live in, I would say it is beach chic styled, its completely covered from wall to wall and floor to roof with photos that inspire me (mostly all ripped out from my dad’s surfing magazines shhh). I love looking around my bedroom walls to see hues of ocean blues and greens within the photos.

If I was to say to you, design your PERFECT soul deck… what would it involve?

Soul decks are awesome because not only can you use them for cruising around, at the end of the day they can be used as an artistic decoration in your house. So my perfect soul deck has to be functional for the pavement but also look pretty for sitting in my house. I would love to paint my soul deck with Aboriginal designs to portray sea country, including stingrays (my totem animal).

What is your favourite colour combo, and how does it make you feel?

I have a few different favourite colours, basically I like anything that’s vibrant. If I had to choose a colour combo it would be either bright pinks and oranges, or blues and greens... I can’t decide (I’m a really indecisive person). These colours remind me of tropical flowers and the colours of the ocean, so they make me feel joyful and excited.

Tell us about your ideal combo of senses…

Sight would definitely have to be in there because I love what I see, that’s why I am a photographer… I want to capture moments I see forever. Within the combo would also have to be touch because to be honest what feels better than running your hand through water as you glides across a wave. Oh and also taste, simply because I love food.

What is it that you do for work, and would you have it any other way if someone said you could do WHATEVER you wanted?

I’m studying at university so I don’t have a lot of time for work (or so I tell myself), but I am a freelance photographer on the side, so I do underwater, fashion and lifestyle photo shoots (mostly for swimwear and surf brands). My motto is “surf forever, work whenever”, I think its really important to enjoy life so you have to do whatever makes you happy. If I could do whatever I wanted and get paid for it, I would be travelling the world, surfing and taking photos.

Lastly, what does it mean to you to live a life of a soul slider? Is there something that drives you to live each day to the fullest, inspire people, live that sensational vagabond life?

To live the life of a soul slider you have to be able to break away from the chaos that surrounds you. You have to be open to new opportunities, make the effort to make connections with new people, open your eyes to what is around you and most importantly take care of the people and environments that support you. That’s what motivates me every day to live the life I love.
