SOUL SLIDER #5 - Happy and Free with Jaimi-Lee

by Tess Willcox

As I read through the musings of one Jaimi-Lee Fitzgerald, I listen to 'Daisy Chain' by Angus Stone. It is as if there wasn’t a song written more perfectly, for what I can only describe as the eliptical daisy child, bohemian spirit, radiant being, harbinger of happiness and conduit of creativity. I met Jaimi, at Top Shop in Byron, with the 14th Soul Deck ever made in hand, presenting it to the original hippie child, with a smile brighter than the sun. Since that day, we have forged a lovely friendship, meeting in random places and supporting each other in our separate endeavours. She has since progressed to be kicking absolute ass within the Spell & the Gypsy Collective team, and has just ordered Soul Deck number 3 for herself.

There are people who cruise into your life, that you never get to spend a lot of time with, but that you know are wedged in there for good. Like your favourite scented candle, that you don’t burn often, but when you do the fragrance is so all enveloping you wish you burnt it every day. Jaimi-Lee is that kind of chick to me. As I wrap up reading her musings, realising just how similar we are, Bob Dylan cruises his way into my ear waves, so reminiscent of the kind of Spirit Jaimi exudes. Cool, radiant, timeless, awesome. As gorgeous outside, as she is inside. She downs chilli margaritas, can style the raddest of spaces, and rolls around the streets of Byron on her Soul Decks.

She, my friends, gets it. She gets what it is all about. Introducing, the exuberant, Jaimi-Lee Fitzgerald.

1. Who are you, and what is it that keeps your soul alive?

I’m Jaimi-Lee, I’m 24, I grew up in a tiny country town just out of Adelaide in South Australia on a property where my parents would call in the cows to eat the grass & the chickens would roam around the backyard. Two & a half years ago I packed up my life and moved it to Byron Bay, not knowing a single soul.

My soul feeds off new experiences, music & all it provokes, the sound of the ocean, the feel of the sun & salt on my skin, making people laugh, nourishing food, country air, inspiring style, good wine & love – love for individuals, for nature, for life. I could go on…

2. Your life looks pretty damn rad!! If you could perfectly design your day, what would it look like?

Coming from your inspiring self! My perfect day would involve a sunrise swim and walk on the beach followed by an epic healthy breakfast with a few of my favourite people, an adventure into the hinterland, a hike, exploring the waterfalls or simply a drive out to the farms to pick up some of the organic produce they sell on the side of the road. Then a little road trip to my favourite beach, Whites or Cabarita, for the entire afternoon – armed with a fresh coconut, fruit, a few magazines & my soul sister (my right hand woman, housemate & best friend, Liv). I’d take a sunset skate on my longboard soul deck down to the store, grab a bottle of red & some food so I can cook dinner for a few friends and laugh the entire night away over stories & old school hip hop music. (EDS NOTE : Ummmmm, off to do that right now. Shall we?)

Or, waking up on a campsite with my favourite people somewhere on the coast & spending the entire day in the ocean, drinking from coconuts, sharing stories and having afternoon beers while watching the sunset.

3. Describe your sunrise and sunset routines for us…

I wake up with the sun everyday, even after a late night, my body is wired to wake up early. I am lucky enough to live literally 50m from the beach so my mornings are normally spent strolling along the beach, watching the sunrise and finishing with a dip in the ocean. I start work early so I get ready for work, stop at my favourite coffee shop for my caffeine fix and head off to the office.

My sunset routines always vary, after the morning my afternoons become a bit chaotic & I’ve never really been one to follow an afternoon routine – I do whatever the hell I feel like doing on any given day. But on Fridays it’s straight to my favourite whiskey bar for a drink.

4. What is your favourite drink combo. Mine is sailor Jerry’s and Coconut Water, FYI.

Chilli Margaritas, tequila, chilli, lemon & salt, or whiskey, straight.

5. What would you say the style of your abode is? Beach chic, Boho eclectic, a shit tonne of organised chaos, or something a bit more descriptive?

Living so close to the beach our house has the beach shack feel to it along with a touch or boho & a little bit of chaos. We have surfboards lining the walls, a few market finds around the place, a lot of DIY & an epic little outdoor area that sees the morning sun. In my room; I have images ripped out from my favourite fashion magazines popped into frames, a huge pile of magazines, yoga books and biographies & my soul decks sitting pretty under my window.

6. If I was to say to you, design your PERFECT Soul Deck... What would it involve? (designs, quotes, words, patterns, size?)

A long board for sure because I’ve fallen off my short board more times than I can count and this mostly results in an ‘almost’ broken ankle and several grazes on my leg. The word ‘Freedom’ would be on there, it’s my favourite word – and not in a meaning that your free from everything or someone but a freedom within yourself, to be who you want to be and do whatever the hell you want to do. I’d keep it a natural, raw timber, because something in its raw most vulnerable state is when it is most beautiful. I’d finish it off with a compass – because no matter what direction you go you’ve got to trust the universes natural compass and know it’s taking you exactly where you want to be.

7. What is your favourite colour combo, and how does it make you feel?

The colours of the sunset over my local beach, Tallow Beach, when the pastel hues (pinks, blues, oranges) in the sky reflect off the water in the late arvo. I feel my most inspired – it’s when I do my best thinking, when I feel my most grateful and when my soul feels most alive.

8. Tell us about your ideal combo of senses (What would you like to be smelling, listening to, seeing etc etc at the same time)

Sight, sound & touch. The combination of a smiling face with laughter is my favourite thing in the world. If someone can make you laugh – keep them in your life forever, these people will make your world brighter. Music festivals have that crazy nostalgic sight & sound feel to them, the memories that stick with you forever; I like to listen to the music, see the people, feel the good vibes. Touch – touching the sand with your feet, the ocean with your body or a person you love with a hug.

9. (And my personal favourite question) What does it mean to you to live a life of soul? Ie. Is there something that drives you to live each day to the fullest, inspire people, live that sensational vagabond life??

To live a life of soul; is to inspire, to let that fire burn inside and feel a complete sense of freedom within your self. For me, it’s consistently wanting to test my limits & go beyond my boundaries - & hopefully I can inspire someone to do the same along the way. If you can go through life meeting inspiring people, falling in love and learning – then I think you’re onto a pretty fun soulful life. I ask myself everyday, ‘When your life is exactly how you imagined it, where to next?’ This is what drives me to keep growing & searching for that next soulful experience.

10. What is that you do for work, and would you have it any other way if someone said you could do WHATEVER you wanted??

I’m the Wholesale & PR Manager at local Byron Bay label Spell & the Gypsy Collective. I fell into the role by accident, I started working one day a week with the brand making jewellery and packing orders. After a LOT of hard work I worked my way up into what I’m doing now. I absolutely love what I do, I get to deal with fashion all day long, go to music festivals for ‘work’, hang with inspiring chicks all day, travel, write & be challenged. It’s hard to believe that this is the work I do now – I thought I’d be 30 before I had a job like this.

I also do some freelance work; styling shoots, reviews, pulling together events & most recently, getting the opportunity to contribute my writing to a magazine. This is a work in progress project for me and it’s something that keeps my creative brain ticking over. I’m constantly aiming high, so who knows what is in store for me next but I have a feeling the universe is taking me in a pretty rad direction – I’ll let it do it’s thing & throw in the hard work along the way.

11. Lastly, what does being a Soul Slider mean to you?

Being a Soul Slider means pouring passion into everything you do, into relationships, love, art, craves, the world and yourself. Creating connections with people, laughing, finding your tribe – those people you’d find it hard to live without, those people that inspire & encourage you – and nurturing them. Trying new things, falling down and getting up again & working hard. Respecting our world, the animals, the nature & the sea. Laughing your heart out, being thankful, going with the flow & knowing that this life is yours – ride it.
